All about the Writer's Block

Sitting for hours and hours wondering what to pen down can get frustrating.

What's more irritating is, when you know what you want to write, but the words refuse to flow through your brain.

If this happens with you, then my dear friend, you are going through a writer's block.

I am sure all of us have heard about this and knowingly or unknowingly been through this.

Writer's block is when you are unable to ink down the image of words that you have thought of. Neither does this mean that your incapable of producing a wonderful piece nor does it mean that you lack creativity. All this means is that at this moment you are unproductive which is highly temporary and you will get back in the grind soon enough.

Earlier it was believed that writer's block is a sign of some invisible power that wanted the artists to stop working. For many years, novelists, poets, and other writers discontinued their work halfway because of the discouragement they experienced.

It was long after that the phenomenon was discovered as something normal and psychological.

A peaceful mind is capable of producing great ideas however even the slightest of distractions is enough to act as a speed-breaker. There are many reasons that can cause writer's block, may vary from person to person, however, a few mentioned below are common.

The most obvious reason is when a writer sits down to write without his will. Writing needs a certain mindset and environment- not just external but also internal. If you don't feel like putting down anything, your mind too won't give in. Always remember, your mind is not any different from your own self.

Always choose a quiet place to work on your write-up. A calm setting will provide food to your thought and words will flow automatically. Noise or any other kind of visual distractions too can interrupt the process. Therefore a check before commencing the task and eliminating all types of intrusions becomes necessary. If need be and considering the comfort level, you could take up writing early in the morning or late at night. Both these times everything is absolutely calm and quiet - just the right atmosphere you need!

Being in the business we all know deadlines are of utmost importance. Submitting the perfect article well enough within the time can result in stress. Work pressure if taken negatively can do more harm than good affecting your ability to focus.

Why does someone take-up any activity?

Because there's some inspiration behind it which gives the drive to hustle. Inspiration and motivation are usually underrated and overlooked. The power they hold can do wonders for you and that's not questionable. A writer is close to nothing with a lack of inspiration. When hit with a writer's block, always and always try finding that one thing that gives you the kick. That one thing because of which you took an interest in writing and you'll see the changes yourself!

Trauma pushes an individual into a shell. It's difficult to come out of tragedy and remain sane. No man can work when his mind is overshadowed with insanity. Hence, adverse circumstances in a writer's personal life will cause him to withdraw. Be it the death of a loved one, end of a relationship, physical illness, and/or financial struggles. An already occupied space cannot accommodate new and fresh ideas.

Don't be afraid of stepping away from what you are doing. Automobiles need rest too after covering long distances, and thus you too need some time off to relax and charge. If you feel stuck, try changing your creative routine. Adopt unique ways to work that you haven't tried before and adapt them for a while. Change is always better and gives you a whole different perspective.

As I mentioned, change is always better - move.

Shift from where you are seated at present. If possible, sit in an open space or beside a window to let fresh airflow. Fresh air will provide oxygen that'll act as fuel for the mind and help speedy performance.

Last but most importantly, NEVER FORCE THE WRITING. I have always believed that a creative process should not be and must not be rushed. In the way of finishing off the project, you may skip on points and thus end up with nothing to write.

Accept that this is normal and that every writer goes through this. Nothing to be stressed about. Imagine how weird will it be to be stressed about not being able to write and not being able to write because you are stressed!

And you know what's weirder?

I was at a writer's block when I started writing this article!
